Crooksbarn Vision for History

Who are we? History helps our children at Crooksbarn to understand this question and allows them to develop a sense of identity. It stimulates and fires the children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and helps the children to understand and ask questions about Britain today. In terms of the wider world, it makes sense of our social, geographical and political relationships. By learning from the past, we can be prepared for the issues of the contemporary world. While history is about real people who lived in the past, its fundamental concern is the understanding of human conditions, set in the context of time. Such understanding comes from the study of life in the past, of thoughts, beliefs, emotions and actions. It is important to gain a sense of how people related to each other, the challenges of their environment, their achievements and problem-solving techniques. Learning about the past can help inform the children to make well thought out decisions about the future. Understanding their local area, gives the children a chance to celebrate and identify with their locality.
